I struggle with them and avoid using barre chords I can play some barre chords but they’re inconsistent I’m comfortable with most barre chords and use them regularly I can play all barre chord shapes cleanly and switch between them smoothly

How well can you alternate pick at faster tempos?

I mostly use downstrokes or struggle with alternate picking I can alternate pick slowly but lose control at faster speeds I’m comfortable alternate picking at moderate to fast tempos I can alternate pick cleanly at very fast tempos with control

How comfortable are you with string bending and vibrato?

I rarely bend strings or use vibrato I can do basic bends but my pitch accuracy needs work I can bend to pitch accurately and use controlled vibrato I use bends and vibrato expressively as key parts of my playing style

How well do you understand scales beyond the pentatonic?

I mainly know the pentatonic scale I know a few other scales but don’t use them much I’m comfortable with major, minor, and modal scales I understand how to use different scales over chord progressions

How well do you understand chord progressions?

I play chords but don’t really understand how they connect I understand basic progressions like I-V-vi-IV I can identify and play common progressions in different keys I understand advanced progressions and can create my own

How comfortable are you playing in different keys?

I mostly play in open chord keys (G, C, D, A, E) I can play in some other keys but it’s challenging I’m comfortable playing in most keys I can transpose and play confidently in any key

Musical Expression & Creativity

How comfortable are you with improvisation?

I rarely improvise or feel lost when I try I can improvise simple melodies over basic progressions I’m comfortable improvising and can create interesting solos I can improvise confidently across different styles and progressions

How many different playing styles can you handle?

I mainly play one style (rock, folk, etc.) I can play 2-3 different styles reasonably well I’m comfortable with multiple styles and can switch between them I can adapt my playing to almost any musical style

How well can you learn songs by ear?

I rely heavily on tabs or sheet music I can pick out simple melodies by ear I can learn most songs by ear with some effort I can quickly learn complex songs and solos by ear

Performance & Confidence

How comfortable are you playing with other musicians?

I mostly play alone and feel nervous with others I can play with others but feel limited in what I can contribute I enjoy playing with others and can hold my own I’m confident jamming with musicians and can lead or follow

How consistent is your playing under pressure?

I make more mistakes when people are listening I can play decently but not at my best under pressure I play pretty consistently whether alone or with an audience I actually play better with an audience and thrive under pressure
